Summer months typically mean more car accidents

When school is out for the summer, people are more likely to pack up the car and hit the road. Starting in late May and lasting through the beginning of September, there are often more people on the road at any given time than during other parts of the year. Naturally, more motorists mean a higher rate of car accidents. Experts call the months following Memorial Day the "100 Deadly Days of Summer."

There are more teen drivers on the road during the summer. School is not in session, and there are many summer activities happening. The combination of young drivers on the road and a busier travel season typically results in an increase in the rate of motor vehicle collisions. Many people believe that distraction is also a factor in the increased rate of accidents during the summer months.

What are distracted drivers?

Teens are more likely than other age groups to engage in distracting behaviors while behind the wheel. However, as you may know, all drivers are susceptible to various things that can take their attention away from the task at hand. When surveyed, drivers say they believe there are more distractions on the road than ever before.

Phones are the most common source of distracted driving. Deadly consequences often arise from checking social media, emailing and even streaming videos while driving. Other types of distractions include eating behind the wheel, talking to passengers, looking at billboards and much more. All drivers, no matter their age, should take steps to eliminate distractions as much as possible.

Are younger drivers more dangerous?

Statistics indicate that an average of 10 people die each day in teen-involved accidents during the 100 Deadly Days of Summer. Younger drivers have less experience and may be more inclined to make reckless choices. However, all drivers are responsible for the choices they make, regardless of age. It is especially important for drivers to be cautious and careful during the summer months.

Were you involved in an accident?

If you are involved in an accident caused by a teen driver or a negligent motorist, you could have legal options available to you. Your recovery needs may include medical care, time off work and more, leaving you with a significant and unexpected financial burden. Florida law allows personal injury victims to pursue financial compensation through a civil claim filed against the liable party or parties.

It is beneficial to act quickly after an accident. A complete assessment of your case can help you understand the specific legal options that may be available to you.
