Motor vehicle accidents and TBIs in Florida

On Behalf of | Feb 2, 2022 | Car Accidents

Car accidents are a leading cause of many forms of physical injuries, including traumatic brain injuries. A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is a type of head injury that can cause permanent damage to the brain. This can lead to problems with thinking, speaking, movement, sensation and emotions. What’s the relationship between motor vehicle accidents and TBIs?

How car accidents can cause traumatic brain injuries

When you’re in an accident, the brain can get slammed into the side of your skull. This is known as a closed-head injury. As you might expect, this type of trauma can cause permanent damage to the brain and lead to lifelong symptoms. It’s also possible for motor vehicle accidents to cause open-head injuries, which are even more likely to be fatal.

Notably, one of the most common motor vehicle accident injuries that can lead to TBI is whiplash. This occurs when the head is snapped forward and then backward in a quick, whipping motion. Whiplash can cause the brain to move around inside the skull, leading to bruising, bleeding and other forms of damage.

What should you do if you think you’ve suffered a TBI?

If you think that you may have suffered a TBI as the result of a motor vehicle accident, it’s important to seek medical attention right away. Symptoms of a TBI can be subtle and may not appear for hours or even days after the initial injury. For instance, you may experience headaches, nausea, dizziness or difficulty concentrating. It’s important to have a doctor evaluate you even if your symptoms seem minor.

If you were involved in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in a traumatic brain injury, you might file a claim that leads to litigation. You have a right to seek damages for your medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
