Report gives 10 cities with highest accident numbers in 2019

At the start of 2020, the transportation nonprofit Go Safe Labs released a report on auto accidents in 2019, making a list of 10 cities with the highest accident numbers and a list of 10 particular "hotspots," or accident-prone locations, in the U.S. Incidentally, one of these hotspots was in Florida in Miami.

First off, researchers stated that there were 953,630 car accidents nationwide in 2019. This marked a 6.8% increase from 2018. Researchers found that 22,188 of these accidents took place in Houston, putting this city at number one on the top 10 list. Charlotte, North Carolina, came in second with 21,818 crashes in 2019 followed by Los Angeles with 19,660, Austin with 16,635 and Dallas with 14,685. The list ended with Raleigh, Oklahoma City, Baton Rouge, Nashville and Phoenix.

Four of the cities actually saw fewer car crashes in 2019 than in 2018: Raleigh had 25.5% fewer crashes in 2019, Nashville 15.4%, Charlotte 13.3% and Houston 12.1%. Also, none of the top 10 cities were linked to the 10 "hotspots."

Greenville, South Carolina, had three locations placed in the top 10 list of most accident-prone regions with a certain exit on Interstate 85, called the Pelham Road Exit, reaching number one. Columbia, South Carolina, saw an intersection placed on the list. Three hotspots were found in or around New York. The remaining were in Portland, Minneapolis and Miami.

There are likely a number of reasons why the number of car accidents rose in 2019, such as the increased use of smartphones behind the wheel. What's important for accident victims to know is that they can be eligible for compensation. Florida follows the rule of pure comparative negligence, so technically, anyone can file regardless of their degree of fault. In a no-fault state, there are limits on who can file a third-party insurance claim. To see where their case stands, victims may see a lawyer.
