Summer months more dangerous with more teen drivers on road

On Behalf of | Jun 7, 2019 | Car Accidents

The summer is a time for vacation and travel, and there is typically an increased number of drivers on the road during these months. With more people on the road any given time, it is no surprise that there are more car accidents during the summer as well. As you know, a few different factors affect the car accident rate.

School is not in session during the summer, and there are more teen drivers on the road. Teen drivers are less experienced and more likely to make errors while behind the wheel. Because of the jump in teenage drivers during the summer, many people refer to the days between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day as the 100 Deadly Days of Summer.

The danger of young drivers

You know that teen drivers have less experience sharing the road with heavy traffic. The combination of more people on the road and a higher concentration of inexperienced drivers often results in serious accidents. This is not a trend unique to Florida roads – it is an issue that affects drivers across the country. Since 2014, each summer has seen a steady increase in the number of teen-involved accidents. Reasons for this include the fact that teen drivers are more likely to do the following:

  • Speed
  • Drive while distracted
  • Follow other vehicles too closely
  • Run through stop signs and intersections

Poor driving habits, such as those commonly displayed by younger drivers, are much more likely to lead to a fatal accident. In many accidents with teens behind the wheel, alcohol is also a common factor.

Parents should do everything they can to teach their children to be safe and cautious behind the wheel. Until they have enough experience, parents will want to enforce their teens’ good driving decisions, limit their time behind the wheel and more.

In an accident with a teen driver?

If you are the victim of an accident involving a teen driver, you may be unsure of what to do next. It is possible that you do have the ability to pursue appropriate compensation, even if the at-fault driver is a minor. During the 100 Deadly Days of Summer, it can be especially helpful to know what to do after an accident. As with all types of personal injury incidents, it is in your interests to seek legal guidance as soon as possible after you suffered physical harm.
