Car Accidents: Answers To Common Questions

Car Accidents

In my years of experience representing people injured in motor vehicle accidents, I have heard many of the same questions from clients during their free initial consultation. Here are some of the most common questions I hear from clients and answers to those questions.

It is important to remember that every case is unique. When in doubt, it is always wise to contact an experienced personal injury attorney if you have specific questions about your case.

What should I do after a car accident?

Your health is the most important thing. Seek medical attention if necessary to ensure you get proper treatment and begin documenting your injuries. If possible, collect names, contact information and insurance information of anyone else involved in the accident as well as names and contact information of any witnesses. If police arrive at the accident scene, answer their questions and give a brief, accurate statement without assigning blame to yourself or other motorists.

Who will pay my medical bills if I was injured in a crash?

The responsible party’s insurer should pay your medical expenses resulting from the accident. However, insurance companies often try to protect their profit margins by undervaluing claims and paying less than victims deserve. If you have concerns about your expenses after an injury, it is wise to contact a lawyer. As former in-house counsel for a large insurance company, I know how insurers work and how to pursue full, fair compensation.

Should I notify my insurer that I was in an accident?

You are legally obligated to comply with your insurer’s investigation. However, your lawyer can often communicate with the insurer on your behalf to take the burden off of you and avoid mistakes that could affect your case. Do not give another driver’s insurance company a statement without first speaking to an attorney.

How much is my case worth?

There is no foolproof formula to determine how much compensation you may be entitled to after an accident, particularly if your case has not been evaluated or investigated by an attorney. During your free initial consultation, I can tell you how much I recovered for accident victims in situations similar to yours and help you understand what you can expect throughout the claims process.
